First Issue of Text
It is my intention, with this 'zine, to provide the New River Valley with another source of do-it-yourself, independent media. This style of media is one that I support whenever possible and would like to see a lot more of. I realized that if more independent media was what I wanted to see in my community, then by golly, I needed to get started. I hope that in the future, this 'zine will be more of a collaborative effort, with a larger number of contributors and a greater diversity of articles.
In this first issue, you will find a feature on the ever-blossoming Blacksburg electronic music scene, followed by a tribute to the Lyric in honor of its 75th anniversary. Then there's a piece from outside the valley expounding upon 18 reasons to venture to the 'Noke. The reviews section covers the novel Belshazzar's Daughter and a retro film review of "Dangerous Liasions."
The column, "Great Outdoors," describes the growing "geo-caching" phenomenon while its neighbor, "Great Indoors," features an interview with one of Blacksburg's premiere yoga teachers, Akke Hulburt. Lastly, this first issue wraps up with a free concert listing and a 'toon. For what sort of 'zine would this be without a 'toon?
